1. Bird Houses and Bird Feeders The Green Schools' Team are delighted to let you all know that for the month of March, we will be doing our best to try encourage as many birds to call to our school as possible. We want them to know they have a safe place to eat and stay here at Scoil Chroí Iosa! Not only have Mrs O' Connor's 4th Class have been busy planting but, Molly's Dad was kind enough to build 4th Class their very own Bird House for our school! Soon 4th Class will be decorating it and it will be placed outside for the birds. We hope that lots of birds will call to our school now that we have a safe bird's house built for them. Both school buildings will have their very own bird feeders to take care of over the coming few weeks in March. Keep an eye out to see if you can spot any birds around our school! Each class will take turns filling and re-filling the bird feeders to ensure that the birds in our locality have plenty of food to eat. |
Green Schools' News Update: 18th January 2019

The Green Schools' team in the Senior Building will be doing the same in the coming days.
Each class in both buildings will be assigned a flower pot to care for. The children in every class will be responsible for watering their flower pots and ensuring that they are seen by the sun so that they can grow!

Green School's News Update: 9th November 2018
Biodiversity is the fifth Green Schools Theme and looks at steps which can be taken to increase awareness of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats, and to increase species richness in our locality.
Christine Coleman (SNA), Ms Hayes (Special Education Teacher), Ms Woulfe (Senior Infants Teacher) and Ms McPolinn (3rd Class Teacher) are delighted to announce that they will be the Green Schools staff co-ordinators this year for Scoil Chroí Iosa as we begin our very exciting journey towards our fifth Green Schools flag for Biodiversity!
In the coming weeks, the most important members of the Green Schools Committee, our pupils, will be selected so that we can get the ball rolling in making very exciting plans about ways our school can build awareness of the importance of plants, flowers, animals and their habitats here in Blarney. If there are any parents out there who are interested in this area and who would like to help out, we would love to hear from you too! If you would like to express your interest in helping out, please contact [email protected]
Please keep an eye out here on this page for updates. We will soon introduce our new Green Schools Committee that will be made up of pupil representatives from all class levels (Junior Infants to 6th Class).

Scoil Chroí Iosa was delighted to be awarded our fourth Green Flag, the Travel Flag on May 11th 2017 last at the Green Schools’ An Taisce event in the Blu Radisson, Little Island.
This was the culmination of two years of hard work that all children, parents and staff of our school became actively involved in! We are so proud of each and every one of our pupils for helping our school achieve this special award and helping to create so much awareness of more environmentally friendly ways of travelling to school.
We started out in September 2015, when we formed our Green Travel Team. Two student members from every class were selected from 1st to 6th class. Our caretaker Mr Michael Murray, Special Needs Assistant, Christine Coleman and teachers, Niamh Hayes, Hugh Cronin and Pádraig Hegarty helped co-ordinate the new Travel Team for our school.
Our team became busy planning fun and interesting competitions to create awareness of more environmentally friendly ways of getting to school. We wanted to encourage more children to walk to school, or for those who lived a little farther away, to park’n’stride. We had many poster competitions to help develop our Travel motto “Walk A While With A Smile” and spread the Travel message right across our school. We organised a variety of themed ‘Walk on Wednesday’ (WOW) events, for example, we had our ‘Waddle on Wednesday’, ‘Winter Woolies Walk’ and ‘Santa Dash’. The children of our school also took part in Funky Feet Friday events where they walked to school in funky, wacky and creative shoes, wellies, and slippers, you name it! These events were great fun and would not have been possible without the support of our parents, teachers, SNAs and other important members of our local community who helped make these events happen, such as Sir Charles of Blarney Castle and Blarney GAA, who were always kind enough to allow us meet before school on our WOW days so that we could walk together as a group to school.
Our Green Schools’ An Taisce co-ordinator, Ellen Murphy was instrumental in helping us achieve our Travel Flag goal and we want to say a huge thank you to Ellen for all her hard work, advice and support throughout this process. Ellen completed Travel Surveys in our school and with the help of our Green Team, also completed a Walkability Audit to assess how user-friendly our footpaths, parking etc. was for the children of our school. Once our findings were completed, Ellen passed these to the Council in order to address some of the safety issues that we noticed as a result of this important school project.
After all the wonderful effort made by each and everyone of the children, parents and staff of our school on our Travel journey, we were delighted to be awarded our Travel Flag. To mark this special achievement, we invited our esteemed former Deputy Principal, Mr John Kelly, who retired in February, back to help us raise our Travel Flag at a whole-school ceremony.
Our Green Travel Team would like to thank each and every person who helped us achieve our Travel Flag!
