Lord Mayor and Lord Mayoress Visit Scoil Chroí Íosa
We were delighted to welcome Lord Mayor, Cllr John Sheehan and Lady Mayoress Aedamar Sheehan to Scoil Chroí Íosa this week. Our new Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress not only come from Blarney but they are also parents in our school. So we were extremely proud to welcome them last week.
This is the 100th year of annual school visits by the Lord Mayor of Cork, a tradition that dates back to Terence McSwiney’s mayoralty in the 1920s .
This is the first occasion that Scoil Chroí Íosa received a visit from a Lord Mayor as Blarney has just became part of the city this year following the expansion of Cork City on May 31.
Lord Mayor, Cllr John Sheehan said: “The traditional annual visit by the Lord Mayor has been enjoyed by generations of Cork students. I am honoured to be Lord Mayor during the 100th year of the annual school visits and also to be the first Lord Mayor to visit schools in our newly expanded city. For some schools, this will the 100th visit by the Lord Mayor and for others, it will be the first visit”.
To mark the centenary of the visits, the Lord Mayor presented Scoil Chroí Íosa with a framed picture containing photographs of the two martyred Lord Mayors of Cork, Tomás Mc Curtain who was murdered by British forces in March 1920 and Terence McSwiney who died on hunger strike in Brixton Prison the following October.

Climate Action Day
On Friday 20th September, we were delighted to welcome Adam Whitbourn to mark Climate Action Day and to celebrate the school's fifth Green Flag for Biodiversity. Adam is the head gardener in Blarney Castle. He donated and planted a native Irish Yew Tree to Scoil Chroí Íosa to mark the day. We hope our yew tree will become as distinguished as Blarney Castle's Award-winning tree,' The Witches' Yew Tree.' The Senior Building marched and chanted rhymes demanding climate action across the village in solidarity with young people around the world. We also made some fantastic climate change posters. Thanks to everyone involved!
