This year we have started our very first block of Literacy Lift Off with:
1st Class Ms O’ Flynn and 2nd Class Mr O’ Leary!
Literacy Lift Off is a whole-class literacy initiative which aims to boost all children’s literacy skills.
There are five stations and we would like to tell you a little bit more about them...
1. The New Reading Station
Ms Fitzgerald (Special Education Teacher) will introduce and read a new book to each child at a reading level that is just right – not too easy and not too hard! These books will be kept safe in each child’s Literacy Lift Off folder. We are very lucky to have gotten brand new coloured folders this year! This makes it easy for all the boys and girls to remember what group they are in during Literacy Lift Off time! Children will take their Literacy Lift Off folder and book home with them each night and they will practice reading their book with an adult at home as part of their homework. Please keep these books very safe and treat them with the love and care they deserve as they are shared amongst the entire school! |
2. The Familiar Reading Station
The Class Teacher will re-read your child’s previous night’s Literacy Lift Off homework book again, before collecting it and returning it to our Literacy Lift Off Library. The idea behind this station is to provide plenty of opportunities for each child to re-read a book that has now become familiar to them (i.e. they can read fully independently). This station helps develop a key skill, reading fluency. It also allows the Class Teacher the invaluable opportunity to hear each child read on a regular basis and watch them progress! We kindly ask that all Literacy Lift Off Books are returned to school each day. If a forgets their “old” book, they might miss the chance to get their “new” book the next day so we urge everyone to keep these books very safe and return them to school the following day please. |
3. Phonics Station
Ms Walsh (Special Education Teacher) teaches the very important Phonics Station. Here Ms Walsh teaches and new letter sounds (e.g. “sh”, “ch”, “a” etc.). Explicit Phonics instruction is exceptionally important, in particular in the earlier primary years, as it helps develop a child’s ability to read and spell fluently. A multi-sensory approach is used at this station, aides learning. Children practice making words with different sounds in a variety of ways, for example, children might use magnetic letters, mini-whiteboards, rainbow letters, letter-sound rhymes, actions, and play bingo games etc. |
4. Comprehension Station
Ms Hayes (Special Education Teacher) teaches the Comprehension Station. Here at the Comprehension Station children begin to learn important comprehension strategies, which will ultimately support their understanding of what they read. We follow the “Building Bridges of Understanding” programme across the entire school and this is reflected during our Station Teaching time. Comprehension strategies such as Prediction, Visualisation and Making Connections and much more are taught at this station. |
Here, the boys and girls of 1st Class are showing us our Prediction hand signal, while making a "P" sign with their hands.
Prediction is all about making a sensible guess about what they think will happen in the story we are about to read. We can make sensible guesses by using the pictures, title and text clues given to us in stories. |
Aoife, Edward, Georgia, Brooke, Lauren and Rosie tell us what Comprehension is all about.
5. I-pad Station
The i-pad station is the independent station that is used to consolidate key literacy skills. Interactive, educational apps such as “Nessy”, “Squeebles” and much more are used for the purpose of building children’s confidence in literacy. These motivating apps help all children put into practice key skills they are learning about in school. A huge thank you to our Parents’ Association for providing the funding for these i-pads, they have been so much appreciated by all here at Scoil Chroí Iosa!
