Outing to the Castle Hotel Restaurant
Aistear theme was brought to life as we enjoyed 5 star treatment at the Castle Hotel. The childre had the privilege of a tour behind the scenes in the kitchens, where they saw hot plates, ovens, sinks for different uses, and even got to go inside the huge fridge. Next they sat politely at tables like real customers and were treated to juice and pancakes. The tour finished with a fascinating demonstration by Mozzam, who showed the children lots of different ways to fold napkins. Sincere thanks to Ian, Una, Mozzam and all the staff for a fabulous morning!

School Tour to Leahy’s Farm
We had a wonderful visit to Leahy’s Farm. The children explored a real crannóg, a lepreachaun tunnel and a huge maze. They whizzed down the big slide, dug in the sand pit, climbed a huge spider’s web, took a trip on a train and hunted for fairies in the forest. We saw, fed and held lots of animals: there were pigs, goats, cows, horses, emus, hens, guinea pigs, mice, rabbits, peacocks, a big camel and even a snake!

Engineer’s Week
Our young engineers practiced their STEM skills at school today! Thank you to civil engineer Cian O’ Mahony of Cumnor Construction who gave a very stimulating talk and showed the children how engineers use dumpy levels, measuring tapes and rulers. The children were inspired to think like real engineers and put this into action building and measuring their own bridges!

Outing to Blarney Woollen Mills
Many thanks to Geraldine and Gillian of Blarney Woollen Mills for the wonderful tour they gave us. We have been learning all about warm and waterproof materials at school and it was fantastic to see and feel real sheepskins, skeins of wool and to find out how these are made into all sorts of cosy knitwear. Go raibh míle maith agaibh!

Arctic Explorers
Our Aistear theme for January was Arctic explorers. We learned all about the Arctic climate, animals, Inuit people and warm winter clothes. We had great fun pretending to be Arctic explorers, building igloos, snow mobiles, sleds etc, snow painting, dressing our “bottle people” and playing with our small world of “ice-cubes” and figurines.
Arctic Art
We celebrated our return to our own lovely classroom with some painting and sticking. The children really enjoyed creating these pictures which show how most of the iceberg is floating under water with only the tip visible above.

Santa’s Workshop
Magical memories created today as our Junior Infants visited the woodwork and design rooms at Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál to see what Santa’s Workshop would be like. Third year elves helped them to make sparkly wooden decorations and draw pictures of Santa to treasure forever. Imagine the excitement when we saw a video of Santa, showing us that he has photos of our school work up on his walls in the North Pole! A big thank you to Mr. Peter French and his elves for welcoming us and giving the children such a wonderful experience!

Junior Infants Science Fair
The youngest scientists in the school took part in seven fascinating science experiments and activities in the halla. They experimented with magnets and weighing scales. Slopes and friction were tested using dinkies on cardboard, tin foil or ridged slopes. They investigated aerodynamics by designing and making their own paper aeroplanes. They experimented with light and colour by testing the effect of drawing on black or white backgrounds. Various everyday items were sorted by identifying what they were made from: wood, metal, plastic or glass. Finally the children had great fun testing whether raisins float or sink in 7Up- what do you predict?

Homes and Buildings
Juniors Infants had a great time on our Social, Environmental and Scientific Trail around the Square today. Our mission was to spot as many different kinds of buildings and homes as we could. The children succeeded in identifying detached, semi-detached and terraced homes, churches, shops, a caravan, a filling station and a hotel. Well done boys and girls!

Maths Stations for Maths Week
Last week in Junior Infants we celebrated Maths Week with our maths stations. There were tangrams, sorting, matching, number games, 3-D shape towers and patterns. The children enjoyed it very much and were wishing it was Maths Week every week!
Aistear: Hallowe'en
We're having a frightening amount of fun at the moment in Junior Infants! For Role Play the children are cooking up spells and potions in the witches kitchen. In Small World, our dolls house has become haunted with spooky characters. At the Sand Table, the children are unearthing all sorts of creatures and organising them according to their size. In the Construction Area, imaginations are running wild, with children building haunted castles, haunted parks and even a haunted fridge-freezer! At Art and Craft the children are coming up with fantastic ways to turn the junk they collecting at home into weird and wonderful monsters.
