The judging panel comprised of representatives from Webwise & PDST, Smart Futures CyberSafe Ireland, Facebook, Twitter, Young Irish Film Makers and Trend Micro.

The feedback for our winning video included the following:
Well executed, the judges loved the madness of the killer rabbits, the newsflash was very effective, reached all audiences, acting was very good and highlighted the balance of having a healthy lifestyle on and offline.

Well done to Rang a Sé, Ms Dennehy and Trend Micro. We had a ball!

Sixth Class Reports on Trend Micro Competition

We, Sixth class from Scoil Chroí Íosa, have become category winners in the Trend Micro ‘What’s your Story?’ competition. We received a lot of help from the teachers, staff and fellow students of our school when making our video. Sixth Class students played many roles in the production and acting of our film. We won €1000 and were ecstatic when we found out that we won! We recorded the video prior to Christmas and got the announcement early January. The video was recorded all around the school and it was lots of fun to make. Once we saw this competition last December,we decided to enter so that we could make some money and spread a valuable message about internet usage. We used many pieces of equipment like green screens, tripods and other items to film the video. We are proud of our achievement and are very happy our video was a category winner. Check out our website, www.scins.ie, to watch the video.
By Simon Boylan.

At the start of December, Sixth Class took part in ‘What’s your story’ which is a film competition held by Trend Micro. Trend Micro is an internet security company. Our video was ‘ Killer Rabbits Break The Internet.’ Our film was about two sisters; one a gamer and one who was sporty. The sporty sister begs the gamer to come out and play with her but she refuses. The internet breaks down so the gamer comes outside to the sporty sister. She ends up having a great time. After all our hard work, it payed off we won €1000 at the start of February. The message of the video was that you can have fun without the internet. We would like to thank Ms.Dennehy and Mr.Cotter.

Valentine’s Coffee Morning 2020

A brilliant day was had by all for our Valentine’s Coffee Morning on Friday the 14th February. The day was punctuated by happy faces, plenty of sweet teeth, full bellies, hot beverages, chats and laughter. That’s not to mention a raffle with fantastic prizes, impeccable service from the Sixth Class students and valuable funds raised for our school. A massive thank you to everyone who donated generous prizes from the local business community, to everyone who baked cakes and ensured we had a remarkable selection on the day and to everyone who turned up and supported us on the day.

A huge thank you to Christine, Luke, Ms Priestley, Ms Corkery, Liz, Lisa, Irene and Ms O' Callaghan for all their help on the day without whom the day most definitely would not have been possible.
Their planning, organisational skills and good humour helped us all in Sixth Class to produce a hugely successful day. Another huge thanks to all the staff who contributed and helped in the planning and execution of such a successful day. Very few see the effort put in by so many and the class are very grateful for all the help as the few hours on the day are reflective of Sixth Class but the success of the event hinges on the teamwork displayed from staff members and students in the days and weeks leading up to the event.

We hope to invest the money raised into school resources, details to follow, and make a charitable donation also. Massive credit to the Sixth Class students who were complimented by all on their great manners, growing maturity and of course their first-class service. Go raibh míle ár gcairde!

Sixth Class Reports on Coffee Morning

Every year in February our school hosts a coffee morning. This year we were lucky enough to host it on Valentine’s Day, Friday the 14th of February. It took place in the Junior Building in Scoil Chroí Íosa. Sixth Class students were the waiters and waitresses for the day. We organised it with the help of our teacher Mr Cotter and our community. Students provided baked goods for the morning. The local businesses donated spot prizes, tea and coffee. The coffee morning was a great success and many people came. We earned a lot of money for the school. We thank everyone who supported us on the day.

On Friday the 14th, we hosted a Valentines Coffee Morning in the Junior Building.
We decorated the hall the day beforehand and put nice art up.
It started at ten in the morning and finished at one in the afternoon.
Everyone baked and donated cakes for it too.
We did it to fundraise and bring the community together.
The Sixth Class became waiters and waitresses for the day.
We got to experience a real work place.
We raised a lot of money for our school and it was a lot of fun.
We’d love to do it again.

On the 14th of February, Scoil Chroí Íosa’s Sixth Class hosted a Valentines Coffee morning in the Junior Building. It was a fundraiser for our school. Most of the children brought in a selection of cakes, buns ,sausage rolls and much more. It was a big success for Sixth Class. We showed we could work hard in and out of the class room and work independently. We are so thankful to everybody that came. They really helped us believe we organise events like this on our own.

By Ava Hanlon and Clíona Kirby.

On the week leading up to the Valentine’s Coffee Morning, Sixth Class went on many trips into the village and to the Junior Building to set up the halla. They put up posters and invited all the locals like the Men’s Shed and Age Active. Sixth Class also got spot prizes for the raffle and asked everybody in the school to make some cakes and pastries. On the morning of the event, Sixth Class set up the hall. When it was nearly time to open up, we split into two teams; the morning team and the afternoon team. Sixth Class didn’t know who was going to turn up. Some of the Sixth Class sold cakes and raffle tickets. Parents started to arrive at around 10 am and some of our Sixth Class students greeted them and showed them to their tables. There they found our waiters and waitresses who served them tea, coffee, water, juice and loads of cakes and pastries. All and all it was a lovely day.

Our Valentines Coffee Morning!
Every year the 6th class from Scoil Chroí Íosa host a Valentine’s Coffee Morning on Valentine’s Day. The coffee morning is a fundraiser for the school and we raised a lot of money. The entry cost was €5 and with that €5 you could get as much tea and coffee as possible. You could also eat all the cakes that were placed on the tables with regular refills. It was extremely busy in the morning, people had to wait in the hall until other people left just to get a seat! In the afternoon it was much quieter but still busy. People like the Lord Mayor, politicians, locals and people from our local secondary school were there. It was a big success!!!

Valentine’s Coffee Morning Preparation in the Junior Building

We’ve been busy preparing for the Valentine’s Coffee Morning in the Junior Building and everyone is welcome! We hope to see as many people from the community as possible and our Sixth Class are looking forward to serving the people of Blarney. It’s on from 10 until 1 on the 14th of February. €5 entry fee is suggested!

Our trip to UCC

We visited UCC during the week and thoroughly enjoyed it as you can see from our photos. We donned our robes and learned about the storied history of the college before assembling in front of the college’s iconic quadrangle for our junior conferring. Who knew the unicorn is the national emblem of Scotland? Or that a statue of Queen Victoria was buried under the President’s garden for sixty years? We didn’t but we do now! We hope to be back studying there in a few years time!

Sixth Class Report on Trip to UCC

Our trip to U.C.C.

On
Tuesday the 4th of February, Scoil Chroí Íosa’s Sixth Class went on a trip to University College Cork. We had lovely tour guides called Katie and Jack. Sixth Class put on the robes that graduates wear. Then we went over to a small house made out of dirt, wood and a bit of stone called a bothán. The bothán was an example of famine-era houses in Ireland and up to 16 people used to live in them. May I say they were quite small! The bothán was outside of the old entrance to U.C.C where there was a crest on the wall just above the door. There was a unicorn which represented Scotland. That was a symbol, a unicorn cannot be tamed so that meant Scotland was an untamable country. However the unicorn had a chain around it which was held by the English lion. It was a sign that England ruled Scotland and it served as a warning to the Irish. The Lion eventually got his nose chipped away by some Irish Rebels. As the tour guide Kate showed us about this crest. Mr. Cotter took lots of photos. Sixth Class really enjoyed the Crawford Observatory. The telescopes inside there were really cool and the way the roof opened was really impressive. Then the Sixth Class ate some lunch. After that we saw the Honan Chapel, it was very interesting. The stained-glass windows were especially outstanding with the contrasting colours. Actually buried in UCC was a stone sculpture of Queen Victoria because they were scared that she was going to get destroyed like the crown on the lion and the chain on the unicorn. We had a great day and we hope to study there one day!

A Fairytale In Blarney by Lily

FairyTale Set In Blarney.

Once upon a time there was three little pigs. They lived in small little houses in the village of Blarney. Blarney was a very nice village.

The first little pig lived in a straw house. He was happy with his little house.
But,the house had no kitchen,so he got take away from fat jacks every night!
He was a bit over weight but that was fine. The second little piggy had a house made out of wood and sticks.
It was a nice house as well. But,his house had no kitchen too!
So he got Apache pizza every Night!
At least he signed up to the running club,so he was skinny.

The third little piggy was a skinny legend!
He had a Castle made out of stone! He called it Blarney Castle. He had a kitchen ,where he made his garden salad.
Then one day a wolf spotted the first little piggy eating his fat jacks.
The wolf said “If you don’t give me a chip I’ll blow your house down!”
The piggy refused to give him a chip.
So the wolf blew his house down and ate the little piggy too!!

The wolf went to the second little piggy’s house.
He saw him eating some pizza from Apache.
The wolf said “I’ll huff and puff and Blow your house down if you don’t give me a slice of pizza!”
This piggy also refused so the wolf blew his house down and ate him too!
The wolf stumbled across the third piggy.
The wolf said “What is that?”
The piggy answered “garden salad!”
The wolf gagged and gagged. So hard in-fact that the two little pigs flew out of his mouth.

The wolf walked away still getting sick after seeing that disgusting green stuff that the pig “garden salad”.When he stopped getting sick he was sooooo Hungry that he went and got a chicken fillet roll in Centra!

The End.
By Lily!

Lava Lamps

What do you get when you mix water, oil, food colouring and an effervescent tablet? A lava lamp that's what! We concluded Science Week by investigating chemical reactions using the aforementioned items. After a series of investigations, we added them all together to make lava lamps. Lessons learned? More oil, less water and don't shake the bottle and mix all the items!

Simon’s Kahoot Quiz

Well done to Simon on creating an excellent quiz this week and publishing it on Kahoot. As you can see, the class were glued to the whiteboard! Who knew Ant and Dec were related? Also a special mention to Sonic the Badger!

The Spaghetti Marshmallow Tower Challenge

We had great fun doing the Spaghetti Marshmallow Tower Challenge as part of our activities for Science Week. We gave each team the tape, string, spaghetti, and marshmallow. Each team had 20 minutes to build the tallest, free-standing structure using the materials supplied to each group. The marshmallow had to be attached to the top of the built structure. At the end of the 20 minutes, the tallest free-standing structure would be the winner.

We imagined the Empire State Building, we imagined the Burj Khalifa, we imagined something taller than two centimetres anyway! Some of the towers were excellent but the marshmallow on top proved to be their undoing. The winner was indeed two centimetres off the table and well done to Eimear, Caoimhe and Lily. Well done to all and thanks to Luke and Mr Hegarty for helping during the experiment.

Lifetime Lab Trip

We had a fantastic trip to Lifetime Labs to celebrate a head start to Science Week. We explored everything related to sound and light and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Through a series of hands on activities we investigated light travelling from a source, splitting and mixing of light, reflection and refraction, and our sight. Using drama we discovered and understood how sounds are made and how sound travels through different materials culminating in the construction of small wind instruments (possibly the most annoying musical instruments in the history of the world!) We had a great day and a special thanks to Una in the Lifetime Labs for providing us with a unique learning experience.

Concern Primary Debate: First Round Success

Scoil Chroí Íosa competed against Glenville NS in Round 1 of this year’s Concern Primary Debating Competition on Monday 14th October. The motion for Round 1 was ‘Homework is a waste of time.’

As the opposition, Sixth Class spent the past few weeks researching the topic of homework, assessing the benefits and the flaws of homework. Mentored by Ms Fitzgerald and assisted by Mr Cotter, the whole class’ research formed the basis of our team’s argument. Represented by team captain Matthew Carroll, Tom Forrest and Ava Hanlon, our team had a tough task on their hands to convince the adjudicators and audience full of pupils that homework is indeed a waste of time. We explored the manner in which homework can be beneficial and how it does not always have to be writing and maths. Technology can play its part as can sport and art. We also realise that if students are finding homework difficult, the teacher can help with differentiation. We also realised the many benefits of parental support in homework but also saw some possible drawbacks such as stress and much more.

Glenville’s team articulately argued against the motion and showed their debating ability by skilfully refuting some of our claims. However our team’s organisation and clarity, allied to a great use of facts down to Sixth Class' extensive research, meant that we just about won an incredibly even contest. A special mention to the rest of the debating team; Eimear Sheehan, Caoimhe Sheehan and Daniel Madden who did a fantastic jobs in organising facts and supporting their team-mates on the day. We would thoroughly like to thank Ms Coffey in Glenville and their team for a great contest.

We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we look forward to debating a new motion in Round 2.

Autumnal Art

Here's some art we did this week using paint, tinfoil and paper!

Ancient China

We recently studied Ancient China and we created presentations on the iPads to show what we learned!
